The Phillies could trade Jim Thome to an American League team, where the aging slugger could serve as a designated hitter. According to sources, the Rays and Yankees are not among the teams interested.

The Tigers had interest in right-hander Shaun Marcum during the offseason that the Brewers acquired him. Marcum could be a trade target for Detroit if he is healthy.

A major league executive has labeled this summer's trade market as a weak one. "There is just not very much movement at all," one executive said. "I count only six teams that are ready to sell." The executive listed the Cubs, Astros, Rockies, Athletics, Mariners and Twins as sellers.

The Dodgers have pursued Carlos Lee, but the Houston slugger may veto a trade to Los Angeles, according to a source. Lee admitted that Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told him his name has come up in recent trade talks with the Dodgers. Since he has a limited no-trade clause, Lee would have to approve the deal. Lee has told the Astros, though, that he doesn't want to waive the no-trade clause.

The Dodgers are in pursuit of Carlos Lee, according to a report. The Astros are looking to move the first baseman in the final season of his six-year, $100 million contract. The Dodgers are among the 14 teams included in his limited no-trade clause, according to a person with knowledge of Lee's contract. His permission would be required to send him to Los Angeles.

Jim Thome is happy to be a Phillie, but said on Friday night that he will listen to trade interest as the July 31 deadline approaches. "I would have to sit down and listen," he said of a possible trade to an American League team, where the slugger could serve as a designated hitter. Thome was Philadelphia's DH in nine straight interleague games this month and hit .333 (12 for 36) with four homers, 14 RBIs and a 1.137 OPS.

If the Cubs are going to trade Matt Garza before next month's non-waiver trade deadline, they are going to have to receive a significant offer. An American League executive says Chicago is using "the Ubaldo Jimenez deal" as a model in talks regarding the right-hander. That means the Cubs will demand two young, controllable players with big upside.

The Angels have a host of productive outfielders and little space for Vernon Wells as he approaches a return from thumb surgery. A trade might be a possibility, but the veteran holds a full no-trade clause and doesn't sound like he plans to waive it. "I prefer to stay here," Wells said. "I love being here. The guys are awesome. We have the potential to be really good for a long time. "I haven't been thinking about (the possibility of a trade)." He didn't completely rule out the possibility that he would allow a trade, but it probably would require an ideal fit.

The Diamondbacks aren't going to look to trade for a starting pitcher in the coming weeks despite recent injuries to their starting rotation. "I think we feel like we've got enough depth," Kevin Towers said. "We actually considered even moving some of our depth. It's probably a good thing we didn't, for this very reason."
